The first verse ("Deutschland, Deutschland über alles...") was used as the official national anthem during the Nazi period. The third verse ("Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit...") is the national anthem of Germany today. The second verse, with its theme of "wine, women and song", has never been popular.
At the time that the song was written, the words "Germany, Germany above all" in the first verse referred to the importance of a unified German nation over any of the individual German states. During the Nazi period, these same words were often thought to refer to the Nazis' goal of world domination.
